Fats are an essential nutrient that provide the body with energy, help absorb vitamins, and support cell growth. They are also critical for hormone production, brain function, and protecting organs. Each gram of fat contains 9 calories, which is more than double the calories in a gram of protein or carbohydrate (both have 4 calories per gram). Unsaturated fats (found in foods like avocados, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and natural nut butters) support heart health, improve cholesterol levels, and help reduce inflammation. Saturated fats (from butter, cheese, and meats) can be part of a balanced diet in moderation and may support hormone regulation and energy needs. For the average person, fats should make up about 20–35% of daily calories, with most coming from unsaturated sources. Having the right balance of fats in the diet is important for steady energy, healthy cells, and proper absorption of various vitamins.
